Aksara Bali uah

Should we not implement both scripts, Bali and Latin, the way that the Uzbek wiki does with both Latin and Cyrillic? Or, if the community wants, we could shift to Aksara Bali the way the Buginese wiki has done. DerekWinters (talk) 18:52, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi @DerekWinters:, I would like to use both, but for many Balinese itself hard to find who can read and write both aksara Bali and Basa Bali. For more broaden viewer, I think better we stick to aksara latin. Thanks Joseagush (talk) 04:10, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

Too hard to display (even they know there's Noto Sans Balinese available)? No IME for them? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 08:34, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi @Liuxinyu970226:, I think its hard even for Balinese using basa bali with both aksara Bali and aksara Latin. So better still using aksara Latin to introduce more broad target. Thanks. --Joseagush (talk) 04:08, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
^Per this reason, also why quite many nusantara wiki are not expanded, ban-latn is preferable than only 'ban'.--Aldnonymous (talk) 17:51, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

@Wirjadisastra: As you know, the tool is currently down. It happened when the Trusty Job Grid on which the tool was running was shutdown on 25 March. Now, what needs to be done is that the tool needs to be migrated to Stretch Grid which requires the attention of SQRobin. Once the link starts working, I will ping you. I have currently submitted a request to add me as a co-maintainer for the tool which I think will be processed soon. I know that my reply has been too technical but it was just to inform you the present situation. Hope the tool starts soon. Adithyak1997 (talk) 14:58, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Article count uah

This Wikipedia was created as a standalone wiki earlier today (or yesterday, depending on where you are) and its content has already been imported from the Incubator test wiki. Please check for any missing (non-imported) pages. The on-wiki statistics are not working yet (most counts are still showing "0") because the maintenance script that initializes the values (i.e., counts them for the first time) has not been run yet. This is normal. The script should be running in a matter of hours (maybe about 9 hours after I'm posting this), and when that happens the article count (currently 23.239) and the other statistics should jump up above 0. Please note that only pages in the main namespace that contain at least one wikilink will be counted as articles (also known as "content pages") because this wiki uses the 'link' counting method, so do not expect the article count to match the count of all pages in the main namepsace. Thanks, and congratulations on your new wiki! (I am watching this page, in case you have any questions.) - dcljr (pabligbagan) 15 Oktober 2019 11.09 (WITA)Balas

As can be seen in my comment above ("currently 23.239") and at Special:Statistics, the wiki has been counted for the first time. If 23.239 seems like too low of an article count, just link at least one term in the text of each page in the main namespace, like this, and the article count will rise. - dcljr (pabligbagan) 16 Oktober 2019 09.55 (WITA)Balas

Comment uah

Hi @Dcljr:, Thanks for the info, but we still have some problems:

  1. First, The category pages seems not working as its supposed. Example Kategori:Negara not mention all articles used the category, ex. Ethiopia, etc. I am using PAGENAME in category for each articles to make it count in NUMBEROFARTICLES. example: PAGENAME for each article which used it.
  2. Second, we can not use Tools or Gadgets for this wiki. None of them in the preference. ex. HotCat, Wikied, etc. Whats wrong?
  3. Third, The Visual Editor menu seems not active, as we already used and familiar with the community.

Thanks. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 16 Oktober 2019 13.13 (WITA)Balas

  1. I'm not sure what you mean by "not mention all articles used the category". As for the connection to NUMBEROFARTICLES, the kind of "category links" you're talking about (like Kategori:Name and sortkey), which place pages into categories, do not make pages count as articles. Neither do … links, which display images and other types of media files (oh, and interwiki and interlanguage links don't count either). "Regular" wikilinks that lead to category or file pages (like Kategori:Negara or Berkas:Chairil Anwar cigarette.jpg, which are made by using :Kategori:Negara and :Berkas:Chairil Anwar cigarette.jpg [note the ":" after the opening brackets]) do make pages count as articles — but those are not the kinds of links that would normally appear in articles, so it doesn't really matter that they "count". In most cases, only regular wikilinks to other article titles on the same wiki, like this edit I mentioned above and this edit I just made, are used to make pages count as articles. (Note that, as seen in the second example, the target article doesn't actually need to exist — in other words, "redlinks" still count.)

Also, note that the use of |PAGENAME in category links is no longer necessary after the move from the Incubator. Such sortkeys were used over there because otherwise all articles would be listed under "W" in their respective categories, since all Balinese article titles at Incubator started out "Wp/ban/". That is no longer true on this wiki, so just using, e.g., Kategori:Negara will work the same way as PAGENAME.

  2. I'm not sure how to get access to tools and gadgets, but since Special:Gadgets exists here (but lists no gadgets), I assume someone just needs to import the relevant code (the gadgets themselves) into the appropriate places. I don't know anything about this. Maybe Jon Harald Søby does? (I assume this mention of him here will "ping" him and bring him to this discussion.)
  3. I don't know about the Visual Editor, either, but maybe phab:T235487 is relevant?
[edit conflict] OK, I think I see what you meant by "not mention all articles used the category". I just found that Leoben was not listed at Kategori:Kota, despite being tagged with that category. I fixed this by making a null edit to the page (edit the page but don't change anything, then just save the page). If you want to take the time, you can do null edits on all existing pages in the main namespace, and that should fix things. I may do this myself "soon" (next few days?) — if so, I'll report it here. (As for what caused the problem in the first place, I'm not sure. Maybe the importing was done before the "Category" prefix was properly localized?) - dcljr (pabligbagan) 17 Oktober 2019 10.55 (WITA)Balas

Hi @Dcljr:, Thanks for the reply. For short, in incubator we already have +1400 articles, and the NUMBEROFARTICLES here not same. As per example, we have already +100 articles about country which not mention in Kategori:Negara, ex. Myanmar, Vietnam, etc, which not appears in the category pages. Its not just happen in that category, all category pages seems same. ex. Kategori:Tokoh. Thats why, I try to use the PAGENAME in each articles category and it works. I am not quite sure how the NUMBEROFARTICLES works, but when i used PAGENAME the counting seems starting. That's what i mean "not mention all articles used the category". Joseagush (pabligbagan) 17 Oktober 2019 10.47 (WITA)Balas

I think that's just a coincidence. Like I said above (which I tried to submit before your last comment, but got an edit conflict), any edit to a page that's not currently showing up in a category it's supposed to appear in (including edits in which nothing at all is changed) will make the page appear in the category. You must have been testing this out on pages that had not been edited yet after being imported. - dcljr (pabligbagan) 17 Oktober 2019 11.00 (WITA)Balas
Regarding NUMBEROFARTICLES not matching the count given at the Incubator, this is by design and not indicative of an error, since article counting works differently at the Incubator compared to on standalone wikis. The Incubator counts all pages placed in a certain root category; standalone wikis count (by default) pages in the main namespace containing at least one wikilink. Totally different. It is possible to count all pages in the main namespace (dropping the wikilink requirement), but since Wikipedia articles should be interlinked with each other, the wikilink requirement is usually seen as appropriate for Wikipedias (but maybe not for other kinds of projects, like Wikisources). - dcljr (pabligbagan) 17 Oktober 2019 11.09 (WITA)Balas
Wow, thanks for the explanation. Its mean a lot. Okay its clear now thats PAGENAME not affected the counting. I will ask again if any problem coming. For now, your answer is very satisfying. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 17 Oktober 2019 13.26 (WITA)Balas
I have created phab:T235843 to address the category problem. It may also result in a higher article count. - dcljr (pabligbagan) 18 Oktober 2019 18.40 (WITA)Balas
Thanks a lot. You guys awesome, so its a glitch in program running process as you mention in Phab. I learn a lot.Joseagush (pabligbagan) 18 Oktober 2019 23.09 (WITA)Balas
The script has been run (quicker than I was expecting) and the categories look "full" to me. Also, the article count has jumped up to 23.239. If this still seems low, just continue to link terms on main-namespace pages that don't have any "regular" wikilinks on them. - dcljr (pabligbagan) 19 Oktober 2019 11.41 (WITA)Balas
As I've pointed out at Wikipédia:Pasangkepan#Final steps making this a working standalone wiki, the visual editor should now be working. - dcljr (pabligbagan) 23 Oktober 2019 12.45 (WITA)Balas

Navigation templates bug uah

Halo, @Dcljr, SPQRobin, MF-Warburg, lan Wirjadisastra: One of my created navigation template is not working properly. See this. As you can see the code hlist seems not working and make all input vertical. What is the problem for this? I already try to copy standard module (modul) and template (mal) used in en.wiki or id.wiki and still not working properly. Thank you in advance.Joseagush (pabligbagan) 1 Nopémber 2019 16.47 (WITA)Balas

Sorry, I don't know how the Navbox module works. Maybe you could ask a user who has recently edited en:Template:Navbox, en:Module:Navbox, id:Templat:Navbox, or id:Modul:Navbox. - dcljr (pabligbagan) 2 Nopémber 2019 09.23 (WITA)Balas

Hi @DannyS712:, can you solve this problem? See this template or Navbox template or Navbox module. Thanks. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 23 Nopémber 2019 16.53 (WITA)Balas

@Joseagush: solved - its because you need to import the CSS too. In this case, search for "hlist" on en:MediaWiki:Common.css - that should probably be copied to MediaWiki:Common.css. Unfortunately, normal admins cannot do this. --DannyS712 (pabligbagan) 23 Nopémber 2019 17.05 (WITA)Balas
@DannyS712: thanks for fast replay. So, who can do this? Can our community elect admin for mediawiki admin first? or what level of admin needed? Thanks in advance. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 23 Nopémber 2019 19.50 (WITA)Balas
You need an interface administrator. --DannyS712 (pabligbagan) 24 Nopémber 2019 06.11 (WITA)Balas

Balinese on the list of languages with more than 1,000 articles. uah

Hello @Dcljr, SPQRobin, lan MF-Warburg: The Balinese Wikipedia already has more than 1,000 articles. However, it does not appear yet in the list of main page of wikipedia itself with more than 1,000 articles. Could you please add it? Wandering ant (pabligbagan) 12 Januari 2020 12.06 (WITA)Balas

Balinese Wikisource uah

I've been in discussion with members of the Balinese Wikipedia community about the possibility of moving the Balinese lontar content and transcription platform currently hosted at palmleaf.org over to a Wikimedia site. I'm still working on the technical details, but as a starting point, it seems like the most appropriate place would be Balinese Wikisource, which still has to be created. What do people think? Lautgesetz (pabligbagan) 15 Pébruari 2020 06.00 (WITA)Balas

Hi @Lautgesetz:, Thanks for the discussion. I think, as our community still struggling to maintain this wikipedia and has not too many active members, the best way is not to make Balinese Wikisource first for 2-3 years ahead. My best recommendation is to make articles in this wiki (and Indonésian wikipedia if necessary) for each manuscripts there and create a link to palmleaf.org (let say we create project called #WikiLontar) or you can use Indonésia Wikisource which already has team members and projects. What do you think? Matur suksma. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 15 Pébruari 2020 09.35 (WITA)Balas
Hi @Joseagush:, basically, the issue is that the Internet Archive prefers not to run palmleaf.org and wants to find a more appropriate home for the project. Using a well-supported platform like Wikisource is better for the long-term success of the lontar digitization effort. There are around 20 active users transcribing manuscripts on palmleaf.org. Wouldn't making them active on Balinese Wikisource likely mean more users on Balinese Wikipedia as well? What is the downside of creating Balinese Wikisource? PanLex (which I work for, and which created the platform on palmleaf.org) would be responsible for figuring out technical details in order to move things over and set up the transcription interface on the new Wikisource, and the people in Bali currently organizing the work on palmleaf.org (some of whom are already involved in Balinese Wikipedia) could continue organizing the work there. Indonésian Wikisource is an option, I guess, but the lontar are not in the Indonésian language and it makes more sense to me to have Balinese literature stand on its own. I've had preliminary discussions with some Balinese Wikipedia community members who were open to the Wikisource idea. I've invited them to discuss here so everyone can weigh in. Lautgesetz (pabligbagan) 16 Pébruari 2020 09.07 (WITA)Balas
Hi @Lautgesetz:, Well, I am no objection to have Wikisource, rather it would be nice if we have Balinese Wikisource soon, if you or someone can handle its. Basically, even wikipedian in our community even not much knew how to operate in this wiki alone yet another wiki like Wikisource will be confused for them. As you can see, not many people involved in this wiki. Yes, some member in "our community" already talked to me also about this collaboration. But as long as i knew, our community itself not ready yet. Thanks.
OK, thank you for the feedback. It looks like setting up a new Wikisource is more work than I realized. I've been reading in more detail about the process, and one option is to set up a Basa Bali page on the Multilingual Wikisource, similar to what already exists for Basa Jawa. I believe that would allow us to work on moving the content and functionality from palmleaf.org without having to set up and manage a new site. Does that seem like a better option? Lautgesetz (pabligbagan) 16 Pébruari 2020 14.22 (WITA)Balas
Yups, go ahead. I, myself, will support the idea. I would like to contact my community to support the idea. But, as i said before, not promised that it will be maintain regularly as no human resources here. Thank you for your support. Joseagush (pabligbagan) 16 Pébruari 2020 16.29 (WITA)Balas
